Broward County Environmental Protection Department Announces Environmental Comics Contest Winners

Students from Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science, Forest Glen Middle School and Pioneer Middle School were named the winners of the 2006 Environmental Comics Contest sponsored by the Broward County Environmental Protection Department. Special awards were also presented to students from Attucks Middle School.

In an effort to promote the value of Florida’s natural resources and the need to protect and maintain them, the Broward County Environmental Protection Department developed the 2006 Environmental Comics Contest. The contest, which was open to middle school students in Broward county public schools, asked the students to create a comic strip depicting how environmental superheroes can protect Florida’s environment.

More than 4,327 contest announcements were distributed to all middle school teachers in Broward County and seven middle schools participated, submitting a total of 800 comic strip forms. The students’ work shows creative ideas on how superheroes can protect Florida’s environment. Classroom teachers conducted the initial screening of all submissions and forwarded 300 comic strips for final judging.

The winners are: first place, Allison Miranda, grade 7, Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science; second place, Teal Gordon, grade 7, Forest Glen Middle School, third place, Mark Margulies, grade 8, Pioneer Middle School; fourth place, Jonathan Cohen, grade 8, Pioneer Middle School; and fifth place, Kristena Vico, grade 8, Pioneer Middle School.

The award winners will be recognized by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners at their regular meeting in the Commission Chambers at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27.
