Broward County Celebrates National Community Development Week: April 9 – 15
The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is proclaiming the week of April 9 -15 as National Community Development Week.
In celebration of the week, an open house will be held on Wednesday, April 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Broward County Governmental Center, Room 302 A, 115 South Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale.
Hosted by the County’s Housing and Community Development Division, the program for the open house will include a presentation by Armando Fana, field office director with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and will showcase two programs: City of Parkland, by GerriAnn Dougherty, leisure services program manager; and the Broward County Housing Authority, with Ann Diebert, chief operating officer, and Phyllis Brown, housing counseling coordinator. Others participating in the program are Suzanne Fejes, assistant director, and Ralph Stone, director, both with Broward County Housing and Community Development Division.
The event is designed for nonprofit organizations, homeowner associations, city representatives, Broward Alliance for Neighborhood Development, Inc. (BAND), and Broward County taskforce members.
This year marks the 32nd anniversary of National Community Development Week. The weeklong recognition, with the theme “CDBG- Building Strong Communities,” is designed to bring attention to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
The CDBG program is designed by the federal government to assist low- to moderate-income residents, and it helps fund safe and sanitary housing, suitable living environments, and necessary public services, as well as revitalization services for downtown areas and residential neighborhoods. More than $195 million in CDBG program funds has been spent in Broward County to improve neighborhoods over the last 32 years.
